This specimen was struck for the Southwestern Pacific island of New Caledonia by the Paris mint, which has issued this type sporadically since 1976. New Caledonia is a major site of nickel mining. This coin shares a common obverse with other types issued for various French colonies, such as French Polynesia (Tahiti) and the New Hebrides. As of July 2015, US$1 = 110 CFP francs (code XPF). The CFP franc is fixed against the euro.
