Sincona sale 6, lot 4163
Aureo sale 243, lot 778

The first specimen was lot 4163 in Sincona sale 6 (Zurich, May 2012), where it sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$2,461 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE Carlos IV. 1788-1808. 2 Escudos 1802. Assayer JJ. Extremely rare. Almost very fine-very fine. Ex Auction UBS 56, Basel, 28. 1. 2003. Lot 3320." The second specimen was lot 778 in Aureo y Calicó sale 243 (Barcelona, April 2012), where it sold for 3,700 € (about $5,590 including buyer's fees).

The catalog[2] noted,

"1802. Carlos IV. Santiago. JJ. 2 escudos. Insignificantes golpecitos y hojita en reverso. Muy bella. Precioso color. Brillo original. Según Krause se acuñaron 374 ejemplares. Rarísima y más así. (Two escudos of 1802, Santiago mint. A few insignicant nicks and a mark on the reverse. Very handsome, great color, original luster, extremely rare, extremely fine.)"

This type is recorded for 1792-1808 but none of the listed mintages are over a thousand pieces.

Recorded mintage: 374.

Specification: 6.77 g, .875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW. This specimen: 6,69 g.
