Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 115

This specimen was lot 115 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,508 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Carlos de Viana (1441-1461). Navarra. Gros. Buen ejemplar. Rara. MBC+. (kingdom of Navarre, Carlos of Viana, 1441-61, undated gros or grueso. Nice example, rare, choice very fine.)"

Prince Charles was the son of the ruling queen but was unable to rule when his stepfather seized the crown. He died at the age of forty in 1461. Cayón lists a gros or groat for this prince but it looks nothing like the present coin.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 2,53 g.

Catalog reference: Cru.V.S. 258 var, Cru.C.G. tipo 2954, falta var, R.Ros 3.18.1, Cayón-unlisted.
