Steve Album sale 51, lot 867

This specimen was lot 867 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $510. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOGNE: Salentin von Isenburg, 1567-1577, AR thaler, 1572, depicts federal shield with the coats of arms of Mainz, Cologne, Trier, Palatinate-Bavaria and Hesse, original toning but some edge clip issues, VF, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." The archbishopric of Cologne, like Mainz and Trier, was an ecclesiastical state along the river Rhine whose ruler was one of the Electors of the Empire. However, he did not rule Cologne itself, which had managed to make itself a free city. Cologne thalers of 1572 include KM MB246 (shown here, date on obverse, struck 1572-77), KM MB245 (date on reverse, struck 1572 only) and KM MB210/Dav-9155, struck by the city.

Recorded mintage: 25,000.

Specification: 29.2 g, silver, 41 mm diameter, plain edge, this specimen 28.87 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-9132, KM MB246.
