This specimen was lot 23219 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $3,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 2000 Reis 1891, AU58 NGC, light silvery-gray toning with considerable mint luster, rare date and grade." This date is the rarer of the three known (1891, 1896 and 1897). After 1900, this denomination was reduced to 20 grams, with the likely result that older issues in government vaults were melted.
Recorded mintage: 40,000.
Specification: 25.5 g, .917 silver, .751 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM 498.
