Stack's Bowers 2020 NYINC sale, lot 21225
Norway SB210-21225r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21225 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "NORWAY. Speciedaler, 1869. Kongsberg Mint. Carl XV. NGC MS-62+. An incredibly wondrous specimen, this near choice piece offers tremendous underlying luster and impressive surfaces. A darker iridescence is evident as one approaches the peripheries, augmenting its appeal. RARELY encountered so attractive, this example is unsurprisingly the finest certified in the NGC census." In 1907, Norway obtained a divorce from Sweden and became an independent kingdom under a Danish prince. Even before passing under Swedish rule in 1814, Norway had enjoyed a separate coinage from Denmark. This type, recorded for 1864-69, is now rare. It was struck to the Danish standard (Dav-75) rather than the larger Swedish riksdaler (Dav-356).

Recorded mintage: 57,000.

Specification: 28.89 g, 0.875 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-325; Dav-245.
