Steve Album Auction 52, lot 757

This specimen was lot 757 in Steve Album Auction 52 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "BENGAL PRESIDENCY: AR nazarana rupee, Shahjahanabad (Delhi), AH1219 year 47, in the name of Shah Alam II, with 5-point blossom to right of the umbrella in obverse center, type A/1 (counterclockwise outer floral design on both sides), VF-XF, R." This rupee was struck by the Britsh for the Padishah emperor AH 1219-1221, by which time the Mughal Empire barely stretched beyond the suburbs of Delhi. The SCWC catalogs this scarce type as a regular rupee, not a nazarana rupee.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.44 g, silver, this specimen 11.14 g.

Catalog reference: Stv-8.29, KM-714 (listed under Muhal Empire.
