Sincona sale 31, lot 354

This specimen was lot 354 in Sincona sale 31 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,306 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "REPUBLIC OF TUNISIA, 10 dinars 1986ce/1406ah AU French legend Pf." This type of 1983-86 was struck with Arabic legends (shown here) and French legends, both rare. It is unlikely to have circulated beyond the president's circle of cronies and supporters. The thuggish portrait is strongly reminiscent of Mussolini in the thirties.

Recorded mintage: 725 proofs.

Specification: 18.77 g, 0.900 fine gold, .539 troy oz AGW, this specimen 18.78 g.

Catalog reference: KF 124, KM 335.
