Bamberg (1443-59) schilling
This specimen was lot 544 in Sincona sale 89 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 150 CHF (about US$198 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Bamberg, Bistum, Anton von Rotenhan, 1431-1459. Schilling o. J. (nach dem Münzverein von 1443), Bamberg. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Bankhaus Aufhäuser 10, München, Oktober 1993, Los 1332. (Germany, bishopric of Bamberg, Anthony of Rotenhan, 1431-59, undated schilling struck per the monetary convention of 1443, Bamberg mint. Very fine-extremely fine.)"
A schilling was twelve pfennig just as an English shilling was twelve pence yet this coin is one third the weight of an English shilling. Numista comments, "[This is] Coinage of the bishop of Bamberg Anthony of Rotenhan in the monetary union of 1437 with the burgrave Frederick VI of Nuremberg and the bishop of Würzburg John II." The arms are of Bamberg, Würzburg, Nürnberg and Zollern; the standing figure is emperor Henry II (973-1024), canonized in 1147 by pope Eugenius III.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver or billon, this specimen 2.16 g.
Catalog reference: Krug 163. Heller 42.
