Great Britain 1764 1/4 guinea
This specimen was lot 1290 in Sincona sale 79 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 3,800 CHF (about US$4,554 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, George III. 1760-1820. Pattern 1/4 Guinea 1764, London. Young laureate head right, plain edge. By Richard Yeo. Very rare. NGC PROOF Details. Flan flaw, removed from jewellery." This pattern was for a denomination (nominally 5 shillings threepence) which never went into production. By this time, the mint had ceased to produce anything but gold coins and Maundy sets, causing a grave shortage of circulating media. Guineas were superseded by sovereigns during the reform of 1817.
