Savoy 1571 doppia Fr-1042
This specimen was lot 21395 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Sardinia. Doppia, 1571. Emanuele Filberto. NGC VF-35. A moderately circulated example of this RARE type with pleasing detail that results from a strike that was far more even than most seen. Nicknamed 'Ironhead' for his military prowess, Emanuele Filberto is perhaps best known for his Italianization of the House of Savoy, which had been occupied by France since the time he was a child. After his assumption of power, he moved the capital to Turin and made Italian the official language in Piedmont (a northwest region in Italy)." Friedberg lists this type for 1570-76. Emanuele Filiberto was merely duke of Savoy; his descendants would not claim the title of king of Sardinia until 1720.
