Sincona sale 97, lot 1390

This specimen was lot 1390 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zurich, May 2025), where it sold for 600 CHF (about US$870 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Solms-Hohensolms, Ludwig, 1668-1707. Gulden (60 Kreuzer) o. J., Hohensolms. Mit Gegenstempel des Fränkischen Kreises auf der Vorderseite. Sehr selten. Fast sehr schön, Gegenstempel: Sehr schön. Exemplar der Sammlung des Fürsten zu Solms-Hohensolms-Lich, Auktion Künker 212, Osnabrück, Juni 2012, Los 4122. (Germany, county of Solms-Hohensolms, Louis, 1668-1707, undated gulden or sixty kreuzer, Hohensolms mint, with a counterstamp of the Franconian Circle on the obverse. Very rare, About very fine, countermark: Very fine.)"

The gulden or sixty kreuzer or two-thirds thaler became very popular in late seventeenth century Germany and dozens of princes issued them. Some of them were less than scrupulous about weight and fineness, leading other regions to counterstamp the good ones to allow them to circulate, as here. This type is also known dated 1677. Other gulden from this state include Dav-968, -970, -972, -973, Dav-974, -975, -976, -977, -978, -979, -980, -981, -983, -984, -985, -986 and -988.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: silver, this specimen 16.50 g.

Catalog reference: KM-96, Joseph 292, Dav-987.
