Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 76451
SB924-76451r.jpg

This specimen was lot 76451 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRAN. Afsharid Dynasty. Rupee, AH 1160 (1747/48). Tabriz Mint. Nadir Shah. NGC AU-50. Impressive on nearly all counts, this appealing Rupee retains bold details with light brilliance throughout." This specimen was offered again as lot 38766 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $105. The Afsharids were of Turkic origin, and the dynasty was founded by Nadir Shah when he deposed the last ruler of the Safavid Dynasty in 1736 AD. He expanded Persian rule to areas previously lost to the Ghilzai Afghans in the east and to the Ottomans in the west. However, he was assassinated in 1747 AD and thereafter the dynasty carried on in a weakened state, with various claimants who eventually split off, the most important being the establishment of the Durrani Empire in Khorasan. This type "D" rupi was struck AH 1152-1160 at many mints and is common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.5 g, silver.

Catalog reference: A-2744.1; KM-385.11.
