Flanders 1586 1/2 duit
This specimen was lot 1538 in Jean Elsen sale 155 (Brussels, June 2023), where it sold for €90 (about US$118 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips II (1555-1598), Cu halve duit (3 mijten), 1586, Brugge. Vz/ Bourgondisch kruis. Kz/ Gekroond leeuwenschild tussen het jaartal. Zeldzaam. Op een brede muntplaat geslagen. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Philip II, 1555-98, copper half duit or three mites of 1586, Bruges mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross; reverse: crowned arms divide the date. Scarce, struck on a small flan, Very Fine.)"
The half duit is a denomination better known in the northern provinces, where it was struck extensively in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
