Sincona sale 83, lot 3564

This specimen was lot 3564 in Sincona sale 83 (Zurich, May 2023), where it sold for 10,000 CHF (about US$13,383 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN, Karl XIV. Johann, 1818-1844. 4 Dukaten 1843, Stockholm. Mit der Signatur AG (Alexander Grandison, Münzmeister in Stockholm, 1838-1855). Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Gutes vorzüglich (kingdom of Sweden, Charles XIV John, 1818-44, four ducats of 1843, Stockholm mint. Rare in this condition, Good extremely fine)." This is the highest mintage date of a rare type struck 1837-39 and 1843. It is accompanied by ducats (KM 628a) and double ducats (KM 629). Carl was originally a general in Napoleon's army who accepted the Swedish king's invitation to marry the king's daughter and become his heir. He ruled 1818-44 and his descendants reign over Sweden today.
