Kampen 1688 daalder Dav-4879
This specimen was lot 75532 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Overijssel. Liondaalder, 1688. NGC AU-50. This wholesome looking example displaying light attractive gray tone with hints of iridescent hues in the protected areas." This type was struck by the city of Kampen 1675-93. The auctioneers incorrectly attributed this example to Overijssel ("MO·ARG·PRO:CON-FOE·BELG·TRAN:") but it is an issue of the city of Kampen ("MO·ARG·CIV·IMP BELG·CAMPEN"). The reverse legend, "CONFIDENS : DNO : NON : MOVETVR," means, "He who has confidence in the Lord shall not be moved." The States General complained for decades that the municipal mints, such as Kampen, cheated on their coinage's weight and alloy and finally closed them all at the end of the seventeenth century.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver, 41 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: Dav-4879; Delm-862, KM-35.4.
