from the Stack's Bowers 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70158

This specimen was lot 70158 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2020), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1580-HB. Dresden Mint. August. NGC AU-58. Exhibiting a deep cabinet tone, this robust taler displays little evidence of handling while yielding some light wear on the highest points of the reverse. Great quality and preservation for the type." This Davenport type was struck as late as 1585 and is common.
