Saxony 1591-HB thaler Dav-9816

Sincona sale 51, lot 3279

This specimen was lot 3279 in Sincona sale 51 (Zurich, October 2018), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,809 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"Sachsen, Kurfürstentum, Christian I. 1586-1591. Taler 1591, Dresden. Auf seinen Tod. Selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, Christian I, 1586-1591, thaler of 1591, Dresden mint, on his death. Rare, Very fine-extremely fine.)"

Saxony was a wealthy state at the end of the sixteenth century and was blessed with numerous silver mines. Many thalers were produced. This one marks the death of the duke.
