Sincona sale 33, lot 2385

This specimen was lot 2385 in Sincona sale 33 (Zurich, October 2016), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$475 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Sachsen, Herzogtum. Johann Friedrich, Heinrich und Johann Ernst, 1539-1540 Taler 1540. Buchholz. Sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Saxony, John Frederick, Henry and John Ernest, 1539-40, thaler of 1540, Buchholz mint. Very fine.)"

Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This one is fairly common.
