Philippines 2002 piso rev DSLR.jpg

The currency of the Philippines, which was called pesos and centavos during the American colonial period, was reformed in 1969 and renamed "piso" and "sentimo" which were the Tagalog translations. Locals, however, continue to use the old names. This type was struck in 1995-2003, then switched to nickel plated steel for 2003-17 (KM 269a). The obverse bust is of José Rizal, martyr of the struggle for independence from Spain.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 6.1 g, copper-nickel, 24 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM 269.
