Philippines 1997 5 pisos rev DSLR.jpg

The currency of the Philippines, which was called pesos and centavos during the American colonial period, was reformed in 1969 and renamed "piso" and "sentimo" which were the Tagalog translations. Locals, however, continue to use the old names. This type was struck in Manila and Winnipeg 1995-2017. The obverse bust is of Emiliano Aguinaldo, leader of the rebels, first against the Spanish and then against American occupation. He survived until 1964 but was never able to live down accusations of collaboration with the Japanese during World War Two.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 7.7 g, nickel brass, 27 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: KM 272.
