SB121-20563r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 711 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,289 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Albrecht en Isabella (1598-1621), AV dubbele souverein, 1613, Brugge. Vz/ De aartshertogen met zwaard en scepter op een troon gezeten. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild omringd door de keten van het Gulden Vlies. Zeer zeldzaam Zeer lichte montagesporen aan de rand. Goed geslagen exemplaar, op een brede muntplaat. bijna Prachtig. (county of Flanders, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, gold double soverain of 1613, Bruges mint. Obverse: the archduke and archduchess enthroned with sword and scepter; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Very rare, light mount mark, well struck on a large flan, about Extremely Fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 20563 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $3,240. The catalog description[2] noted, "SPANISH NETHERLANDS. Flanders. 2 Souverain d'Or, 1613. Bruges Mint. Albert & Isabella. PCGS Genuine--Filed Rims, AU Details Gold Shield. Obverse: Albert, holding sword, and Isabella, holding scepter, seated facing on double throne; Reverse: Crowned coat-of-arms within Collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece. A SCARCE and impressive issue, this engaging specimen features a great strike with shimmering luster and tremendous detail remaining, especially within the renditions of the archduke and archduchess. The noted rim filing does not detract in the slightest from its overall appeal." This type was struck in Flanders, Tournai and Brabant 1612-20 but all dates are rare. Note the "FLA" next to the crown on the reverse.

Recorded mintage: 3,059 for 1612-13.

Specification: 11.08 g, .947 fine gold, the first specimen 10,96 g, the second specimen 10.98 g.

Catalog reference: KM 16, Fr-223, G.H. 304-6b; Haeck 776; Delm-554; V.H. 612.
