Jean Elsen sale 151, lot 1250

This specimen was lot 1250 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$3,748 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips de Stoute (1384-1404), AV kwart gouden nobel, 1388-1404, Gent, Mechelen en Brugge. Vz/ Bourgondisch wapenschild in een achtpas. Kz/ Gebloemd kruis met in het hart een P en vier leeuwtjes in de hoeken. Uiterst zeldzaam Gereinigd. Is gemonteerd geweest. Zeer Fraai. Uit de verzameling Paul De Witte en uit onze veiling 85, 10 september 2005, 970. (county of Flanders, Philip the Bold, 1384-1404, quarter gold noble, Ghent, Mechelen or Bruges mint. Obverse: Burgundian arms in octolobe; reverse: floriate cross with a "P" at the center, cantonned with four lilies. Extremely rare, cleaned, has been mounted, Very Fine.)"

This coin was issued by the Burgundian duke for Flanders, the wealthiest part of his domain. It accompanied a noble (Fr-169) and half noble (Fr-170). The death of his grandson, Charles the Rash, in 1477, allowed the county to pass to the Spanish Hapsburgs.
