Brabant 1580(s) 1/2 ecu
This specimen was lot 552 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,601 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe II (1555-1598), AR demi-écu Philippe, 1580, Maastricht. D/ B. cuir. à g. R/ Ecu couronné avec écusson de Portugal sur le tout, sur une croix de Bourgogne, entre deux briquets, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. Extrêmement rare. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Philip II, 1555-98, silver half écu Philippe of 1580, Maastricht mint. Obverse: armored bust left; reverse: crowned arms with the arms of Portugal over a Burgundian cross between two firesteels supporting the jewels of the Golden Fleece. Extremely rare, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)
La ville de Maastricht fut conquise par Alexandre Farnèse le 28 juin 1579 après un siège de trois mois. C'était la première grande place des Pays-Bas reconquise par l'armée espagnole. Farnèse décida rapidement de fermer l'atelier de Namur, le seul qui fonctionnait sous son autorité, pour rouvrir celui de Maastricht. Le 1er janvier 1580, il donna commission au maître Gilles van Haelbeke pour y reprendre l'émission des types monétaires de Philippe II antérieur à la révolte des Etats: le réal et demi-réal d'or, le daldre Philippus en argent et ses subdivisions. (The city of Maastricht was conquered by Alexander Farnese on June 28, 1579 after a three-month siege. It was the first major place in the Netherlands reconquered by the Spanish army. Farnese quickly decided to close the Namur mint, the only one which operated under his authority, to reopen that of Maastricht. On January 1, 1580, he commissioned Master Gilles van Haelbeke to resume the issue of the monetary types of Philip II prior to the revolt of the States: the gold real and half-real, the silver Philip daalder and its subdivisions.)"
The écu des Etats of 1577-80 were deliberately given a face value over their bullion value in order to raise money for the war effort against the Spanish. They were rejected and the States were forced to resume production of the familiar écu Philippe and its fractions in 1580-81. This demi-écu Philippe is known from Antwerp and Maastricht.
