This specimen was lot 6393 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $423. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 5 Franc, 1856-A. NGC MS-64. Sharply struck and lightly toned." This denomination was introduced in 1854 at 14 mm diameter and a plain edge. Later in 1854, the design was revised to add a reeded edge and in 1855 the diameter was increased to 17 mm. Gold five francs were struck until 1868.

Recorded mintage: 2,959,617.

Specification: 1.61 g, 0.900 fine gold, 17 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Jacques-Jean Barré.
