Jean Elsen sale 160, lot 1925
JE160-1925r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1925 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €260 (about US$329 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon III (1852-1870), AV 10 francs, 1855 BB, Strasbourg. Rare. Beau. (empire of France, Napoleon III, gold ten francs of 1855, Strasbourg mint. Rare, fine.)"

This specimen, from the Strasbourg mint, is a scarce date of a series struck in France 1855-60. The ten francs d'or is, as a class, much scarcer than the contemporary twenty francs d'or. It is especially rare to find in nice condition. The earlier type (Fr-576), with a 17 mm diameter, was struck 1854-55 only and is very scarce.

Recorded mintage: 32,146[2].

Specification: 3.23 g, 0.900 fine gold, 19 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: F.506/2, KM-784.4; Gad-1014; Fr-577.
