Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 1161

This specimen was lot 1161 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €700 (about US$873 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon III (1852-1870), AV 50 francs, 1855 BB, Strasbourg. 6.854 p. frappées. Rare. Fines griffes et petit coup sur la tranche. Belle couleur. Superbe. (France, Napoleon III (1852-70), gold fifty francs of 1855, Strasbourg mint. Rare, fine scratches and small rim nick, nice color, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1855-59 at Paris and Strasbourg, superseding the forty francs of Louis Philippe. It is not rare, particularly in lightly circulated condition, and most specimens trade for their bullion value. This is a slightly better date.

Specification: 16.13 g, 0.900 fine gold; 28 mm diameter, lettered edge.
