Mainz (15)93 goldgulden Fr-1636
This specimen was lot 3694 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €12,000 (about US$16,174 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Wolfgang von Dalberg, 1582-1601. Goldgulden 1593, Mainz. Vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Dalberg)//Der Wappenschild von Mainz in Vierpaß in den Winkeln die Wappenschilde von Trier, Köln und Bayern sowie unten die abgekürzte Jahreszahl · 93 ·. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Fast vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Mainz, Wolfgang of Dalberg, 1582-1601, goldgulden of 1593, Mainz mint. Obverse: quartered arms of Mainz and Dalberg; reverse: arms of Mainz in quadrilobe with the shields of Trier, Cologne and Bavaria, partial date below. Very rare, about extremely fine.)"
Friedberg listed this for 1586-95. The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This specimen shows only the "93" of "1593".
