Austria 1558 thaler Dav-8022
This specimen was lot 1537 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,291 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Ferdinand I. 1522-1558-1564. Reichsguldiner (72 Kreuzer) 1558, Klagenfurt. R Vorzügliches Exemplar mit feiner Tönung. (Holy Roman Empire, Ferdinand I, 1522-64, guldiner of 1558, Klagenfurt mint. Extremely fine example with fine toning.)"
This type of 1557-58 shows the king (he did not become emperor until 1558) with a beard, which he adopted in the 1550's and wore until his death in 1564. A similar thaler of 1558 (Dav-8023) has the date on the obverse and mentions his new title of emperor.
