Ponterio sale 169, lot 22457

This specimen was lot 22457 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $106. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPANISH NETHERLANDS. Brabant. 1/2 Ecu, 1563. Antwerp Mint. Philipp II (1555-98). Dark toned. VERY FINE." This type represents a very early experiment with decimal coinage, over a century before Russia adopted her hundred kopeks = one ruble.
