Papal States 1848-R scudo Dav-194
The first specimen was lot 2683 in Sincona sale 77 (Zurich, May 2022), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$304 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALY | Vatican - Church State. Pius IX. 1846-1878. Scudo 1848.Anno II R, Roma. Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1847 geändert. Seltene Variante. Fast vorzüglich. (Italy, Papal States, Pius IX, 1846-78, scudo of 1848, year II, Rome mint, 1848/7 overdate. Rare variety, About extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 304 in Nomisma Aste e-live-auction 3 (Verona, Italy, May 2023), where it did not sell. The lot description noted, "Papal States Pio IX (1846-1878) Scudo romano 1848 An. II - SPL+." This type was struck at Rome and Bologna 1846-50 and 1853-56. Issues of 1850 and later deleted the engraver's name below the bust.
Recorded mintage: 29,000 (including year III).
Specification: 26.87 g, 0.900 fine silver, the first specimen 26.86 g, the second specimen 26,95 g.
