Kunker sale 263, lot 1275

This specimen was lot 1275 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €7,500 (about US$9,689 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-COBURG-EISENACH, HERZOGTUM Johann Casimir, 1624-1633. Breiter doppelter Reichstaler 1624, Saalfeld. Von großer Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, sehr schön +. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach, John Casimer, 1624-33, wide double thaler of 1624, Saalfeld mint. Very rare, attractive example, toned very fine or better.)

Während der Herrschaft Herzog Johann Casimirs von Sachsen-Coburg (1624-1633) entstanden die folgenden anderthalbfachen, doppelten und dreifachen Taler. Der Münzmeister Wolf Albrecht fertigte sie als reine Repräsentationsgepräge in der Saalfelder Prägestätte. Die Münzen des Jahrgangs 1624 waren als Ehrengabe für das in Coburg abgehaltene Stahl- und Büchsenschießen gedacht. Die Umschrift ELEND NICHT SCHAD WER THVGENT HAT bezieht sich auf die Neutralität des Herzogs im Dreißigjährigen Krieg, die das Land vor großräumigen Plünderungen bewahrte. During the reign of Duke Johann Casimir of Saxe-Coburg (1624-1633) 1½, double and triple thalers were issued. The mint master Wolf Albrecht made them as demonstrations of Saalfelder quality. The coins of the vintage 1624 were intended as a gift of honor for the winners of the Coburg shooting festival. The inscription MISERY NOT HARMFUL WHO HAS THVGENT refers to the neutrality of the Duke in the Thirty Years' War, which saved the country from large-scale looting.)"

This division of the Saxon lands lasted 1572-1638. Saxe-Neu-Gotha dates from 1640.
