Saxe-Old Gotha 1629-WA 2 thaler Dav-LS419
This specimen was lot 1279 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €5,000 (about US$6,459 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN-COBURG-EISENACH, HERZOGTUM Johann Casimir, 1624-1633. Breiter doppelter Reichstaler 1629, Saalfeld. RR Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach, John Casimer, 1624-33, wide double thaler of 1629, Saalfeld mint. Rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"
As these large pieces were given out as prizes at shooting festivals and the like, it is not surprising that most survivors have been mounted. This variety was minted 1629 only. This division of the Saxon lands lasted 1572-1638. Saxe-Neu-Gotha dates from 1640.
Recorded mintage: unknown but quite rare.
