Milan c1500 grosso rev H3029-30770.jpg
Sincona sale 83, lot 2997

The first specimen was lot 30770 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $677.98. The catalog description[1] noted, "Milan. Louis XII of France Grosso ND (1500-13), MS63 NGC. A well-struck specimen with gorgeous cabinet tone. The flan is of good size and is without tears or any evident clipping. The obverse with French arms flanked by the arms of Milan has tremendous eye appeal for an example of this type. Rare in this quality." The weight of this coin is unfortunately not given but is probably one-sixth of a teston. The French invasion of 1499 touched off a multisided war that ended in the 1550's with the Hapsburgs dominating Italy. Milan and Naples were Habsburg possessions 1556-1699. The second specimen was lot 2997 in Sincona sale 83 (Zurich, May 2023), where it sold for 180 CHF (about US$241 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "MAILAND, Ludovico XII. d'Orléans, 1500-1513. Grosso da 6 Soldi o. J., Milano. Sehr schön (undated grosso of six soldi, Milan mint. Very fine)."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver. The second specimen is 3.73 g.

Catalog reference: MIR-243. The second specimen is MIR 239/1.
