Sincona sale 83, lot 2701

This specimen was lot 2701 in Sincona sale 83 (Zurich, May 2023), where it sold for 450 CHF (about US$602 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Getto Litzmannstadt, 10 Mark (Quittung über) 1943, Lodz. Geprägt in Magnesium. Gutes vorzüglich. Mit Kurz-Expertise von Guy Franquinet (Litzmannstadt ghetto, ten mark token of 1943. Struck in magnesium. Good extremely fine)." The Nazis renamed Lodz in Poland to Litzmannstadt after Karl Litzmann (1850-1936), WW I general and Nazi party member. Ten pfennig, five and twenty mark tokens also exist and are scarce. The ghetto was liquidated in 1944 and all its inhabitants sent to the death camps.

Recorded mintage: 100,000 (including KM Tn3).
