Sincona sale 83, lot 2700

This specimen was lot 2700 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 180 CHF (about US$241 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Getto Litzmannstadt, 5 Mark (Quittung über) (1943), Lodz. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Leichte Prägeschwäche. Die Quittungen über 5 Mark wurden im Getto als letztes Nominal 1944 geprägt (Litzmannstadt ghetto, five mark token of 1943, Very fine-extremely fine, Slightly weakly struck, Tho dated 1943, these were made in 1944)." The Nazis renamed Lodz in Poland to Litzmannstadt after Karl Litzmann (1850-1936), WW I general and Nazi party member. Ten pfennig, ten and twenty mark tokens also exist and are scarce. The ghetto was liquidated in 1944 and all its inhabitants sent to the death camps.

Recorded mintage: 600,000 (including KM Tn2).
