Heritage sale 3081, lot 31293
GB H3081-32193r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32193 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $28,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: An Iconic Piece of Stuart Engraving. James I (1603-1625) gold Rose Ryal ND (1612-1613) AU58 NGC, Tower mint, Tower mm, Second coinage. Ever-popular as a type, a truly superlative piece and very rarely found as well-preserved as this. This denomination marks the final British coin produced following the Sovereign canon of Henry VII, with monarch enthroned between pillars, the reverse shield within a rose (hence 'Rose' Ryal). The present specimen has been fantastically struck so as to leave no weakness anywhere on the planchet, every detail boldly rendered (particularly James's portrait); there is a slight wave to the flan, but this is certainly as-made. With exceptional color and quality of production, collectors could scarcely hope for a better representative of the type." This rose ryal of James' second issue was accompanied by a unite (Fr-234), angel, half angel, spur ryal (Fr-231), double crown (Fr-235), crown and half crown (Fr-237). With the accession of James I we drop "England" as the country name and adopt the current "Great Britain."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13 g, 0.995 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-230, KM 42, S-2613, N-2079.
