Sincona sale 94, lot 1894

This specimen was lot 1894 in Sincona sale 94 (Zurich, October 2024), where it sold for 600 CHF (about US$832 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"INDIEN Mughal Empire. Muhammad Shah, 1131-1161 AH (1719-1748). Mohur Year 3 / 11(33) AH (1720/1721), Khujista Bunyad. Vorzüglich. Kleiner Stempel- und Schrötlingsfehler. (India, Mughal Empire, Muhammed Shah, 1719-48, mohur of the year 3/AH 1133, Khujista Bunyad mint. Extremely Fine, Minor die and flan flaw.)"

The Mughal Empire stretched over most of India in the early eighteenth century and numerous mints struck gold mohurs for the emperor. The Mughal Empire dominated India during the seventeenth century but broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. This collapse allowed European colonizers entry into the subcontinent and eventual British control. This type is listed from many mints; this mint is listed for years 1-4, 7, 10-13 and 19; other dates may exist. While the regnal date ("۳") is very bold on the reverse of this specimen, the calendar date ("۱۱۳۳") is partially off the flan on the obverse.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 10.8-10.9 g, gold, this specimen 10.96 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-831, KM 438.13.
