Stephen Album sale 50, lot 3105

This specimen was lot 3105 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAXONY: August III, AE pultorak, 1756-EC, a scarce type that is not commonly seen, stronger strike than most, XF, S, ex Dr. Robert A. Rosenfeld Collection." Altho the auctioneers listed this as an issue of Saxony, we will follow the SCWC and list it under Poland (Augustus III ruled both the electorate and the kingdom). The obverse legend mentions only August's title as king ("REX POLONIARUM") and the Polish eagle is shown on the reverse. The denomination, the pultorak, or half a trojak, was not used in Germany. This very rare type was struck 1755-56.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.08 g, 0.288 fine silver, 17 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 166 (listed under Poland), Kopicki-2090.
