Dominican Republic 1944 10 centavos

The specimen shown is from a type struck for the Dominican Republic in 1937-61. This date issued during the regime of Rafael Trujillo, among the more brutal of Latin America's long roll of bloodthirsty dictators. Soon after his assassination in 1961, the capital, which he had renamed Ciudad Trujillo, reverted to its former name, Santo Domingo. Copper-nickel coins using this design were issued 1967, 1973 and 1975.

Recorded mintage: 1,000,000 (a better date).
