Cape Verde 1968 escudo
This type was struck in 1953 and 1968 for the Portuguese colony of Cape Verde, a group of islands off the west coast of Africa. It is the last coin issued for the colony before independence and is a reissue of a type struck in 1953. Fifty centavos (KM 11) and five escudos (KM 12) were also struck in 1968. Unlike Angola and Mozambique, Cape Verde obtained its independence in 1975 with little bloodshed. Since independence, Cape Verde has been ruled by the same political party which controls Guinea-Bissau on the mainland; they are de facto united.
