Sincona sale 76, lot 1063

The first specimen was lot 734 in Sincona sale 11 (Zurich, May 2013), where it sold for 6,250 CHF (about US$7,738 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DÄNEMARK Christian IX. 1863-1906. 1 Christian d'or 1869, Kopenhagen. Sehr seltener Jahrgang, nur 539 Stücke geprägt. Vorzüglich-FDC. (Denmark, Christian IX, 1863-1906. Christian d'or of 1869, Copenhagen mint. Very rare date, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The second specimen was lot 1063 in Sincona sale 76 (Zurich, May 2022), where it sold for 9,000 CHF (about US$10,924 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"DENMARK. Christian IX. 1863-1906. 1 Christian d'or 1869, Kopenhagen. Mit den Signaturen CS und HC (Diderik Christian Andreas Svendsen, Münzmeister in Kopenhagen, 1869-1893, und Harald Conradsen, Stempelschneider in Kopenhagen, 1873-1901). Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Fast FDC. NGC MS62. (kingdom of Denmark, Christian IX, 1863-1906, christian d'or of 1869, Copenhagen mint, with mintmaster's initials "CS". Rare, especially in this condition, About uncirculated.)"

This coin, struck 1869 only, is the last in a series begun in 1828 during the reign of Frederick VI. Since 1513, the kings of Denmark have alternated between the names Frederick and Christian; when Fredericks VI and VII ruled, this coin was called a frederiks d'or; when Christians VIII and IX ruled, it was called a christians d'or. It was the same size and weight as a Prussian friedrichs d'or (KM 371, KM 398, KM 415, KM 442) and a Saxon gold five thalers (KM 1054, KM 1102, KM 1113, KM 1123, KM 1143). All the Danish issues are rare today. In 1874, Danish coinage underwent a decimal reform and Denmark joined the Scandinavian Monetary Union. The christians d'or was superseded by the twenty kroner.

Recorded mintage: 539.

Specification: 6.64 g, 0.896 fine gold, .191 troy oz AGW, the first specimen 6.65 g, the second specimen 6.63 g.
