This specimen was lot 46897 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. 2 Centesimi, 1897-R. Rome Mint. Umberto I. PCGS MS-65 Red." Between 1861 and 1867, the government struck 153 million two centesimi pieces. It was not until 1895 that more were needed and this type was struck 1895-1900. This was struck to the module of a French two centimes and is a common date. King Umberto was assassinated by an anarchist in 1900.
