Chile 1856 decimo
The second specimen was lot 45583 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. Decimo, 1856-So. Santiago Mint. NGC AU-58." This type was struck at Santiago 1852-60. An upright condor was adopted for 1862-67 with a lower relief used for 1867-72. This condor with outspread wings also appeared on half décimos, twenty centavos and fifty centavos coins of the 1850's. The low relief contributed to a rather drab design which wore down rapidly in circulation. Overdates (1856/5) are reported.
Recorded mintage: 580,000 including an 1856/5 overdate.
