France 1793-A louis d'or
This specimen was lot 20230 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1793-A. Paris Mint. Louis XVI (1774-93). NGC AU-55. An EXTREMELY RARE type and even rarer than the 24 Livres we are offering in this sale. The last gold coin to bear the bust of soon-to-be guillotined Louis XVI. Flashy and lustrous, with little evidence of wear. A few adjustment marks on the obverse and slightly weak strike on the reverse. Our first offering of this type. Quite good eye appeal, highly desirable and another great prize for the advanced collector." The second specimen was lot 43029 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $14,400. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. Constitution. Silver 24 Livres Essai (Pattern), Year 5/1793. Paris Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS SPECIMEN-63. Plain edge. By A. Dupré. A VERY RARE and enchanting specimen, this resounding example presents lustrous brilliance throughout, all while a sharp strike and elegant cabinet toning augment its flair that much more. The exact denomination would appear to be that of the 24 Livres, as Margolis suggests, though the Farouk tag (possibly from Schulman) suggests 15 Sols and PCGS offers forth the idea of a Louis d'or. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from the Farouk Collection in March 1954). Ex: Palace Collections of Egypt [King Farouk] (Sotheby's - 3/1954) Lot # 2175 (part of)."
Reported Mintage: unknown.
Specification: 7.65 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter. The second specimen is 25mm; 8.44 g.
Catalog reference: Fr-477; KM-617.1; Gad-61. The second specimen is Maz-50 (R3); Guilloteau-372.
