The specimen shown is from a type struck for Portugal 1927-68. The later issues of the 1960's are quite common but earlier dates are not. The 1935 is the key, priced in the SCWC at $6,000 in uncirculated. This bust of Liberty was also used on the fifty centavos of 1927-68 and several colonial coins. Portugal, then under the dictatorship of Antonio Salazar, did not waste any time on idle mottos such a "Liberty," "Freedom," or "Justice."
Recorded mintage: 4,099,000.
Specification: 7.5 g, copper-nickel-zinc, reeded edge, 26.8 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 578, Gomes-25.21.
