Jean Elsen sale 121, lot 783
Brabant c1553 florin rev JElsen 121-783.jpg

This specimen was lot 783 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,361 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles Quint (1506-1555), AR florin Karolus d'argent, s.d. (1553-1556), Anvers. Deuxième type. Droit: B. vieilli de l'empereur à droite, la barbe courte. Revers: Ecu d'Autriche-Bourgogne posé sur une croix fleuronnée ne coupant pas la légende. presque Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Charles the Fifth (1506-55), silver "carolus florin" without date (1553-56), Antwerp mint, second type. Obverse: aged bust of the emperor to right with short beard. Reverse: arms of Austria-Burgundy over a floriate cross which does not divide the legend. About very fine.)"

This rare type is not mentioned in Davenport, either because he was not aware of it or because it is too light to be counted as a thaler.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 22,52 g.

Catalog reference: G.H., 188-1; Delm-6; W., 669.
