Schwyz 1791 groschen
This specimen was lot 5386 in Sincona sale 68 (Zurich, October 2020), where it sold for 450 CHF (about US$593 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | Schwyz | misc, Groschen 1791, Schwyz. Variante mit kl. Girlande unterhalb der Wappenleiste. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (canton of Schwyz, groschen of 1791, Schwyz mint. Variety with small garland. Rare in this condition, Very fine-extremely fine.)"
This rare type is listed in the SCWC for 1793 only. This was the only issue of this denomination by this canton. The groschen, or three kreuzer, does not fit the typical Swiss coinage of rappen and batzen. Four kreuzer made a batzen and forty batzen made a thaler.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: billon; this specimen 1.33 g.
