Jean Elsen sale 156, lot 1741

This specimen was lot 1741 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €240 (about US$308 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, VENISE, Andrea Gritti (1523-1539), AR mocenigo, s.d. (1537). Sigle AZ (Antonio Zorzi). D/ Saint Marc remettant une bannière au Doge agenouillé devant lui. R/ Le Christ deb. de f. sur un piédestal, bénissant et ten. un gl. cr. Très Beau à Superbe. (republic of Venice, Andrea Gritti, 1523-39, undated silver mocenigo, circa 1537, mintmaster AZ (Anthony Zorzi). Obverse: St. Mark passes a banner to the doge kneeling before him; reverse: Christ stands on a pedestal, facing, holding an orb and blessing with the other hand. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

"Lira Mocenigo (o più semplicemente Mocenigo) è la lira veneziana emessa per la prima volta sotto il dogato di Pietro Mocenigo tra il 1474 ed il 1476. Il Mocenigo mantenne il nome anche con i dogi successivi e fu coniata fino al 1575. I tipi sono quelli classici: al dritto è rappresentato il doge inginocchiato che riceve lo stendardo da San Marco ed al rovescio il Cristo nimbato. Pesava circa 6,52 grammi ed era al titolo del 928 millesimi di fino. Ebbero lo stesso nome anche monete simili di Modena e Mantova, coniate nel XVI secolo.
