This specimen was lot 23867 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Erfurt. Free City Taler 1617, AU50 NGC, light silvery toning. Erfurt was already beginning to lose its position of importance in the 17th century, thus the coin mintages were not substantial. Note the interesting alchemy symbols found on both sides of the reverse shield. From The J.G. Collection." Several varieties of thalers are listed for this date (Dav-5258, -5259, -5260, -A5259, -5262). Later issues are all rare.
